Good guy, bad guy, in my way guy.  This little beauty was found outside my door about 10:30pm last night after I got off work.  My porch light is out, so it took me a second to see her since it was dark.  Naturally, a shiver went all over my body, and my adrenaline started pumping.  I thought her body was a weird shape…so I got out my handy dandy phone, turned the flashlight on and realized I was looking at fur? Yes, but also a sac full of babies.  I decided I didn’t want to release all of those into my home, and I still can’t tell if she is a bad guy.  Scooting her out of the way with my door mat(still scared!!!!), I went inside and googled her immediately.

She’s a wolf spider, which is a type of nocturnal non-weaving spider that feeds on insects. It doesn’t spin a web but walks around at night to feed. It is easy to find them at night with a light because they have a reflective quality in their eyes (as you can see) The other reflective/iridescent spots are babies!!!!  They carry their sacs around with them.  They are considered harmless to humans.  Glad I didn’t shmush her.

“HE WAS A GOOD GUY”

I don’t really kill spiders unless I think there is a chance they will bite me or if they are going to harm someone/something around me. But the other night I dumped a load of fresh laundry from my bed to my floor, too tired to fold it, and a black spider hopped out! IT WAS ON MY BED IN MY CLOTHES! All I could think was “Kill it. Now.”

Afterward, I felt so bad I spent half an hour googling what kind of spider it was to see if he was a good guy or a bad guy…instead of going to bed for my 5:45am shift. Turns out. He was a good guy…I lost sleep that night. When does it become clear when you are too sentimental…..when you google the spiders you kill to see if they are poisonous or not…oops.

I get chills and choked up every time...

“Come on and let’s wash each other in tears of joy and tears of grief and fold our lives like crashing waves and run up on this beach.”
